A watermelon is a great summer fruit that promotes itself as a delectable thirst quencher and a colorful, aromatic fruit. It is essentially a summer fruit but nowadays is available throughout the year though it is still the sweetest in summer. Watermelons are part of the Cucurbitaceous family just like cantaloupes, squash and pumpkins. They come in various shapes like round, oblong or spherical and have a green hard surface which is usually spotted or striped. The inside is pinkish peach in color with small brown seeds and sometimes seedless. It is moist, watery and soft inside. Thus sweet, juicy watermelon is packed with some of the most important antioxidants in nature.
Watermelon is packed with essential vitamins like A and C through its concentration of beta-carotene. In fact high intake of Vitamin C and beta-carotene has shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, reduces the risks of colon cancer and alleviates some of the osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. In case you have even wondered why this fruit is called water-melon, this is because the fruit is very high in water content, around 92% water and it is fleshy, crunchy and a favorite thirst- quenching fruit. The scientific name for watermelon is Citrullis lanatus. The best thing about this fruit is that it is very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium and is a great source of potassium. The calories that come from this fruit is from its sugar content.
