Obesity means having 20% or more extra weight in your body than your ideal weight / fat. Obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories than he can burn and this can be calculated through the Body Mass Index or BMI. A person is considered overweight if his or her BMI is between 25 and 29.9; a person is considered obese if his or her BMI is over 30. Morbid obesity is when a person is 50% – 100% over his normal weight and has a BMI of over 40. In this case the health and normal functions of the body is affected. Being fat or thin usually runs in the family. Sometimes we just tend to follow our genes and no diet plan or exercise can come in the way. 
Though genes are important, environmental factors include lifestyle behaviors such as what a person eats and how active he or she is.

Most of the increase in obesity in the last 25 years is a result of decreased level of daily physical activity. One has to have a daily exercise regime that he needs to follow everyday.

Most people eat in response to negative emotions such as boredom, sadness, or anger. During a binge-eating episode, people eat huge amounts while feeling they can’t control how much they are eating. Here, medical attention is needed.
Though not too common but certain hormonal illnesses contribute to weight gain. Those are hypothyroidism, depression and some rare diseases of the brain that instigates weight gain.
Certain drugs like steroids and anti-depressants cause excessive weight gain. This can be controlled by exercising a little extra everyday.
