The Skeletal System

The skeletal system is made up of 206 bones.

 

The functions of the skeletal system are:

  • Shape and support: the skeleton gives the body its framework and gives us our individual shape.
  • Protection: the skeletal system protects our vital organs.
  • Movement: bones are attached to muscles to provide movements.(it is also jointed)
  • Blood production: read and white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow cavity and spongy bone.

Types of Bones

The Four Main Types Are:

 

  1. Long bones: these bones are the large bone of the arms, legs, hands and feet.
  2.  Short bones: these are the small bones of your wrist and ankles.
  3. Flat bones: these are the bones of the skull, scapular, ribs and pelvic girdle.
  4. Irregular bones: these are the bones found in the vertebral column and your face.
